Pakistan Targets $4.6 Billion in IT Exports as Digital Infrastructure Expands
Pakistan is aggressively scaling its digital economy, with the government setting ambitious targets to boost information technology exports and bridge the digital divide. In a recent review of the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that promoting the IT sector is a top government priority to leverage the country’s youth potential.
Aggressive Export Targets and Economic Growth
The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has indicated that Pakistan’s IT exports are projected to reach between $4.5 billion and $4.6 billion during the current fiscal year. This push is part of a broader strategy to transform the nation into a competitive global hub for digital services.
To support this growth, the government is focusing on several key pillars:
- Infrastructure Investment: Expanding the reach of high-speed internet to ensure businesses can compete globally.

- AI Integration: In February 2025, the government organized “Indus AI Week” across 30 cities. The event featured 88 pavilions and attracted over 100 international delegates, signaling Pakistan’s intent to integrate artificial intelligence into its economic framework.

While export growth is a primary goal, the government is also addressing domestic connectivity to ensure that the digital boom isn’t limited to urban centers. Domestic internet connections have seen a significant jump, rising from 1.9 million in 2024 to 5.1 million in 2026.

- Public Connectivity: Fibre connectivity has been extended to government health units and schools in Islamabad and the rollout of free internet hotspots in the capital is nearing completion.
- Community Learning: To foster digital literacy, e-learning pods are being installed in Fatima Jinnah Park and Saidpur Model Village.
- Regional Access: The government is expediting the establishment of Asaan Khidmat Centres in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, with plans to coordinate with provincial governments to introduce similar facilities nationwide.
