Summer Persists Into October

Italy is bracing for a weekend of unseasonably high temperatures as a strong high-pressure system anchors itself over the central Mediterranean.

The atmospheric stability ensures little movement in the current forecast, with above-average heat dominating the country from north to south. While clear skies will prevail through the weekend, meteorologists are tracking a potential shift in circulation between October 7 and 9 that could introduce variable conditions and thunderstorms.

Island and Southern Heatwaves

The most intense heat is concentrated on Italy’s major islands. In Sardinia, cities including Oristano, Cagliari, Tortolì, and Iglesias are expected to reach 30°C. Sicily will mirror these conditions, with Catania and Palermo hitting 30°C, though inland areas like Enna will remain slightly cooler due to their elevation.

On the mainland, the Tyrrhenian side of Southern Italy will feel the brunt of the warmth. Campania is forecast for highs of 29°C in Caserta and 28°C in Naples. In Puglia, Foggia leads the region at 28°C, while Bari, Taranto, and Brindisi follow at 27°C.

Coastal and Central Temperature Extremes

Central Italy’s coastal Tuscany will record some of the highest regional values, with Livorno and Pisa reaching 29°C. Rome and the surrounding Lazio region are set to hit 27°C. Meanwhile, the Adriatic coast remains slightly more tempered, with Ancona and Pescara reaching 25°C.

Northern Italy’s Summer-Like Values

Northern Italy is experiencing temperatures well above historical averages. In the Po Valley, Bologna, Modena, and Reggio Emilia are forecast to reach 27°C. Liguria is seeing near-summer values, with La Spezia hitting 28°C and Genoa reaching 26°C.

Italy experiences unseasonably high temperatures through the weekend

In Lombardy, Mantua is expected to reach 27°C, while Milan will hover around 25°C. The Northeast will see Trieste climb to 27°C, with Venice and Padua reaching 25°C. The Northwest remains the coolest sector; Biella is expected to be the coolest provincial capital at 19°C, while Turin and Vercelli will see highs of 24°C.

Stable Weather Brings Sunshine Through October 4

Saturday, October 3, will be defined by sunshine across most of the country, with only minor cloud cover over the Western Alps and parts of Sardinia. Sunday, October 4, will follow a similar pattern. While southern Sardinia may see localized, brief showers, these clouds are not expected to disrupt the stable, anticyclonic conditions currently dominating the Mediterranean.

Variables in the Long-Range Forecast

Current mathematical models suggest the high-pressure system will persist until the early part of next week. A change in circulation is anticipated between October 7 and 9, which may bring a return to variable weather and potential thunderstorms starting Wednesday, October 7. Whether this warm spell marks a definitive end to typical autumn cooling remains uncertain, as meteorological projections regarding a true seasonal shift between October 8 and 10 await further confirmation from upcoming data models.
