Brown-Forman Bets on India’s Premium Spirits Boom with New Brand Launches

U.S. Liquor maker Brown-Forman is strategically expanding its presence in India, aiming to capitalize on the country’s rapidly growing premium spirits market. The company, known for Jack Daniel’s, plans to introduce premium tequila and whisky brands – including El Jimador, Herradura, and Benriach – to the Indian market over the next two to three years, according to an executive statement reported by the Economic Times.

India: The Next Spirits Powerhouse

India is poised to become the world’s largest spirits market by volume by 2032, surpassing China, with an anticipated 15-20 million new consumers entering the market annually according to IWSR. This growth is fueled by rising incomes and increased consumer spending on premium goods, including alcoholic beverages.

Expanding Beyond Jack Daniel’s

Brown-Forman currently imports its liquor into India and offers approximately 10 brands, including Jack Daniel’s, Gin Mare, Woodford Reserve, and Glendronach as highlighted by The Hindu BusinessLine. The company intends to introduce three to four additional brands over the next few years, broadening its portfolio to cater to evolving consumer preferences.

Strong Growth in a Challenging Global Market

While global net sales for Brown-Forman slipped 5% to $4 billion in the year ending April 2025, the company experienced a 21% increase in sales in India, reaching 2.1 billion rupees ($22.9 million) in the fiscal year ending March 2025 according to Tofler data. This demonstrates the significant growth potential Brown-Forman sees in the Indian market.

Navigating Regulatory Hurdles

Despite the promising outlook, India’s spirits industry faces challenges including high taxes, advertising restrictions, and complex state-level policies. Gaurav Sabharwal, Managing Director at Brown-Forman India, emphasized the need for companies to build diverse portfolios and expand their reach to mitigate regulatory uncertainty as reported by Reuters.

Future Outlook

Although India is not currently among Brown-Forman’s top 10 global markets, the company is committed to increasing investment in brand building and its local organization to achieve significant growth and potentially enter that league in the coming years according to Business Standard. Brown-Forman’s expansion strategy reflects a broader trend of global spirits manufacturers recognizing India’s potential as a key driver of future growth.
