TOPS (Accept Off Pounds Sensibly): A Legacy of Weight Loss Support
Since its founding in 1948, Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) has provided a supportive community for individuals navigating weight loss. With a focus on accountability and member-created plans, TOPS offers a non-diet approach to achieving and maintaining a healthy weight. The Vermont chapter #13, based in Jacksonville, is celebrating 30 years of service to the community in 2026.
A History of Support
TOPS was established to address the need for group support in weight management. Unlike programs centered around restrictive diets, TOPS emphasizes individual responsibility and peer encouragement. Weekly meetings provide a space for members – men, women, and children over the age of 7 – to share experiences, gain motivation, and track progress.
Accountability and Personalized Plans
Over 70% of new TOPS members join seeking accountability, particularly through regular weigh-ins. However, TOPS doesn’t prescribe specific diets or rigid food plans. Instead, members are empowered to develop personalized meal plans, utilizing tools and tips for portion control and tracking their food intake. This approach fosters sustainable habits and long-term success.
Local Success Stories
The Jacksonville, Vermont chapter has seen numerous members achieve their weight loss goals. Isabel Bosley and Elizabeth Cole have both maintained their goal weights for over 20 years, demonstrating the lasting impact of the TOPS program. In 2019, Rebekah Green from the Jacksonville chapter was recognized as Vermont State Queen, highlighting the chapter’s commitment to member achievement.
Looking Ahead
