Jacob Bridgeman’s Rise at The Genesis Invitational: Five Things to Recognize

LOS ANGELES – Jacob Bridgeman holds a six-stroke lead heading into Sunday’s final round at The Genesis Invitational at The Riviera Country Club. While his consistent improvement has been evident, the manner of his lead is particularly noteworthy. Bridgeman carded a 7-under 64 on Saturday, distancing himself from a star-studded leaderboard and leaving Rory McIlroy acknowledging a comeback is unlikely.

“It’s going to accept something special from me,” McIlroy said.

Here’s a closer look at the American golfer poised for a potential breakthrough victory.

1. An Elite Putter

Bridgeman acknowledges that his putting has been a cornerstone of his success. “I kind of just putted my way around and won some tournaments that way,” he said, reflecting on his collegiate career. This skill has translated to the PGA TOUR, where he consistently ranks highly in Strokes Gained: Putting.

He led The Genesis Invitational in putting through three rounds, even navigating the challenging Poa annua greens of Riviera, which have historically presented difficulties for him. He noted that he’s learned to accept the unpredictable nature of these greens.

2. A Clemson Standout

Bridgeman’s connection to Clemson University runs deep. As a lifelong fan, he thrived during his four seasons (2018-22), tying the program record with five individual wins. His accomplishments include winning the 2022 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship and being named the 2022 ACC Player of the Year. He also earned All-America Second Team honors in both 2021 and 2022.

His success at Clemson positioned him well in the 2022 PGA TOUR University Ranking, finishing at No. 2 and earning immediate status on the Korn Ferry Tour. He secured his PGA TOUR card by finishing 14th on the Korn Ferry Tour Points List in his first full season.

3. Previous TOUR Championship Appearance

Bridgeman previously qualified for the TOUR Championship in 2025, achieving this feat through consistent performance, including a T2 finish at the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches. He finished T27 at the TOUR Championship.

He also demonstrated resilience at the Valspar Championship, leading for the first three rounds before Viktor Hovland ultimately won. Bridgeman finished in a tie for third that week, gaining valuable experience in contention.

4. Comfortable Playing with Rory McIlroy

Bridgeman isn’t intimidated by the prospect of playing alongside Rory McIlroy in the final round, having previously been paired with him in the final round of the BMW Championship. He described McIlroy as “super nice and super welcoming,” and noted that the experience helped him feel more comfortable in high-pressure situations.

While his putting is exceptional, Bridgeman attributes his recent success to improvements in his ball-striking. He credits function with his swing coach, Scott Hamilton, for increasing the height and spin of his iron shots. He also noted the positive impact of switching golf balls at the start of the year.

Through three rounds at Riviera, Bridgeman ranked first in Strokes Gained: Approach and was tied for fifth in Proximity to Hole.
