Mayweather Takes Center Stage on VICE TV

Floyd Mayweather Jr. will anchor an upcoming episode of the VICE TV docuseries Everybody Hates on Tuesday, December 1. The four-division champion, who holds an Olympic silver medal, remains a prominent figure in boxing after a career spanning three decades. The series offers fans the opportunity to view the boxing legend through various lenses, examining his rise as a fighter, his championship status, and his legal issues.

Deconstructing the Public Persona

The series bypasses simple narratives of hero or villain to investigate why certain athletes trigger such visceral reactions from millions. “The biggest stories in sports are often the ones everyone thinks they already know,” said Vice TV President Pete Gaffney. Gaffney notes that modern athletes are often judged in real time, long before their complete stories are understood. “Rather than asking whether these athletes deserve the hate they receive, Everybody Hates asks a different question: How did they become the people millions love, millions hate, and almost everyone has an opinion about?”

Mastering the Michigan Defense

The episode dissects the technical brilliance of the 49-year-old fighter, anchored by archival fight footage and expert testimony. KO On SI highlights the documentary’s focus on the “Michigan defense”—a signature maneuver involving a rolling shoulder to evade incoming strikes. This precise, defensive-first approach enabled Mayweather to build his perfect 50-0 record, frustrating opponents while systematically scoring through counterattacks. Beyond the ring, the series confronts the controversies that have shadowed his life, leaving the final assessment of his legacy to the viewer.

A Roster of Media Voices

To unpack these complex careers, the Everybody Hates anthology draws on a roster of sports media veterans. Contributors include The Atlantic writer Jemele Hill, ESPN and Top Rank host Crystina Poncher, Los Angeles Times journalist Kevin Baxter, and influencer Rachel A. Demita. The series, which premiered October 27 with an episode on Jake Paul, also profiles Aaron Rodgers, Caitlin Clark, Michael Vick, and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Mayweather Plans Return to Boxing Ring

Though Mayweather retired in 2017, he remains an active fighter in some respects. In recent months, he has mentioned renewing hostilities with Manny Pacquiao, has reportedly held discussions with Ryan Garcia over a potential match, and announced his next fight against Matty “The Jedi” Floyd.
