Son of Jean McConville, IRA Murder Victim, Dies in Belfast

James (Jim) McConville, a son of Jean McConville – the Belfast mother of ten abducted and murdered by the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) in 1972 – has died. He passed away peacefully in hospital on Monday, March 23, surrounded by his family, according to a death notice.

A Family Marked by Tragedy

Mr. McConville, of Alexandra Park Avenue in north Belfast, is survived by his sons James, Nathan, Curtis, and L.Jay. His death marks the sixth of Jean McConville’s children to pass away, with five siblings having died in recent years. His brothers Thomas ‘Tucker’ McConville died in 2024, Archie in October 2021, and Billy in July 2017. Sisters Agnes and Ann McConville died in November 2018 and 1992, respectively.

The Disappearance of Jean McConville

Jean McConville was abducted from her home in the Divis Flats area of Belfast in December 1972. The IRA accused her of being an informant, alleging she was passing information to British forces. The IRA later acknowledged killing McConville and eight others referred to as the “Disappeared.” However, a report by the Police Ombudsman found no evidence to support the claims that she was an informant.

Impact on the Family

Dr. Sandra Peake, chief executive of the WAVE Trauma Centre, expressed condolences, stating, “The thoughts and prayers of everyone at WAVE are with the McConville family on the passing of Jim.” She highlighted the profound and lasting pain inflicted upon the family, noting that five of Jean and Arthur McConville’s children died before reaching the age of 60.

Funeral Arrangements

Mr. McConville’s remains will be removed from his home on Saturday at 12:30 pm to Holy Family Church, Newington Avenue, Belfast, for a 1:00 pm Requiem Mass.
