Early Voting Turnout Surges as Candidates Hit Texas Campaign Trails

Democratic U.S. Senate nominee James Talarico cast his ballot near his Austin home on Friday, marking a heavy opening week of early voting across Texas that saw nearly 3 million ballots cast statewide by Friday, according to the Secretary of State’s office. In Travis County alone, more than 170,000 people voted through the first four days, representing a 50 percent increase over the 2022 midterm elections.

Campaign Trail Stops Across Texas

Following his morning vote alongside his mother, Tamara Causey, and girlfriend, Brianna Menard, Talarico headed to a campaign event in Temple before hosting a rally near the University of Texas at Austin. Meanwhile, Republican candidate Ken Paxton spent Friday campaigning in South Texas with stops in Laredo and San Antonio. During a campaign stop in Conroe earlier this week, Paxton told supporters that he’s confident there are more Republicans than Democrats in Texas, but it’s about making sure they all get out to vote. We need every Republican, and we will win if we do that, Paxton said.

Early voting runs through October 30, setting up a final stretch of aggressive campaigning across the state before Election Day on November 3. While the outcomes of those early ballots remain sealed until polls close, Talarico expressed confidence in the current trajectory. We’re going to shock the nation and shock the world when we take back Texas, Talarico said. No Democratic candidate has won a statewide office in Texas in 32 years.
