Hampshire secured their place at the Vitality Blast Finals Day after a commanding 75-run victory over Essex at the Utilita Bowl on Wednesday night. Captain James Vince led the charge with a blistering 125 off 61 balls, setting up a semi-final clash against the Notts Outlaws at Edgbaston on Saturday.
Hampshire’s Path to Edgbaston
The victory marked Hampshire’s 12th appearance at Finals Day, a record in the competition’s history. Despite a quieter atmosphere at the Utilita Bowl—a result of the match being rescheduled to avoid a clash with England’s World Cup semi-final—Hampshire’s performance remained clinical.
After losing the toss and being sent in to bat, James Vince and Toby Albert established a 60-run opening partnership. Following Albert’s dismissal for 22, Vince capitalized on a dropped catch when he was on 46, accelerating to his century in just 43 balls. Hampshire finished their innings at 211-3. The bowling attack proved equally effective, with Sonny Baker claiming a career-best 5-24 to bowl Essex out for 136.
James Vince on the Challenge Ahead
Reflecting on the win, Vince acknowledged the intensity of the upcoming knockout stages. "Anyone that’s in the competition at this stage is obviously a good side and playing good cricket, and they have a really well balanced side," Vince told BBC Radio Solent.
Vince, who has not played red-ball cricket since 2024, emphasized the significance of returning to the finals. "It’s big to make it back for Finals Day personally, I’m not getting any younger and it’s always a special day to be a part of," he added. The Hampshire captain remains optimistic that replicating the form shown against Essex will provide his side with a strong opportunity to secure their fourth Blast title.
Finals Day Schedule and Stakes
The Vitality Blast Finals Day will take place at Edgbaston on Saturday. The schedule features two semi-finals followed by the tournament decider:
- Semi-Final 1: Northants Steelbacks vs. Somerset
- Semi-Final 2: Hampshire Hawks vs. Notts Outlaws
Hampshire’s squad includes players like Hilton Cartwright, who missed last year’s event and is eager to compete for the trophy. Having limited Essex to 136-9, the Hawks carry significant momentum into the weekend, aiming to convert their 12th Finals Day appearance into their fourth championship victory.
