Jannik Sinner Ends Season Due to Knee Injury

World number one Jannik Sinner has ended his 2026 tennis season prematurely to treat an ongoing right knee inflammation, relinquishing his top ranking to Alexander Zverev. Sinner has not competed since winning his fifth Grand Slam title at Wimbledon in July, subsequently missing the North American hard-court swing and the US Open.

The Italian player announced the decision in a video message released on social media, stating that he and his medical team agreed that immediate treatment was necessary for his long-term career. Sinner will lose 3,000 ranking points over the coming months, dropping his total from 11,000 to 8,000 points. German player Alexander Zverev, holding 9,720 points, is set to claim the number one ranking.

Knee injury forces Sinner to miss autumn events

Sinner’s withdrawal sidelines him from several prestigious autumn events where he triumphed last year. The missed schedule includes the Six Kings Slam exhibition, the ATP 500 event in Vienna, the Paris Masters, and the ATP Finals in Turin. He will also miss the Davis Cup Finals in Bologna, preventing him from representing Italy.

Sinner enjoyed a dominant first half of 2026, capturing five consecutive Masters titles and recording 30 match wins. However, the knee injury sustained after his Wimbledon victory against Zverev halted his momentum. Sinner initially planned to return for the Asian swing but ultimately withdrew from the China Open in Beijing and the Shanghai Masters.

Sinner undergoes knee treatment before 2027 season

Sinner’s support team clarified that the priority is ensuring a complete recovery ahead of the 2027 season. “On the advice of the medical team, Jannik is undergoing treatment for the inflammation in his knee. It was decided to start the treatment now so that Jannik has enough time to recover before beginning preparations for 2027,” the team stated.

“Together with the doctors, I decided that I need to undergo knee treatment, which means that the 2026 season has officially ended,” Sinner said in his video address. He acknowledged the emotional weight of missing the home tournament in Turin, noting that while the late-season atmosphere brought him great joy in past years, protecting his future career must take precedence.
