Jazzy Matty Eyes US Debut After Cheltenham Festival Performance
Cheltenham Festival specialist Jazzy Matty is being considered for a trip to the United States following a narrow defeat in the Grand Annual Handicap Chase last Wednesday. Trainer Cian Collins, although disappointed with the result, is already looking ahead to potential opportunities for the seven-year-old gelding.
Close Call at Cheltenham
Jazzy Matty finished second in the Grand Annual, narrowly beaten by Martator and Charlie Deutsch. Despite the loss, Collins expressed pride in his horse’s performance. “It was tough to take, but I was so happy with the run,” Collins said. Racing Post reports that a photo finish was needed to separate the first two horses.
A History of Success at Cheltenham
Jazzy Matty has a strong record at the Cheltenham Festival, having won the 2023 Fred Winter and last year’s Grand Annual. Irishracing.com notes that the horse seems to thrive at the venue. “He just loves Cheltenham,” Collins explained. “He lights up. He’s just one of those horses who loves the big occasion.”
Targeting the American Grand National
Collins is now setting his sights on the American Grand National at Far Hills in October. He believes the good ground and the travel could benefit Jazzy Matty. “I think the good ground would suit him and he’d love the travelling over, I think it would spark him up,” Collins stated. He also mentioned drawing inspiration from Gordon Elliott’s experience with American racing. Racing Post reports that Ballysax Hank, who was narrowly beaten at Far Hills last year, finished sixth in the Grand Annual, further bolstering Collins’ confidence.
Potential Runs at Aintree or Punchestown
Before a potential trip to the US, Jazzy Matty could race at either Aintree or Punchestown. Collins expects another strong performance from the horse, stating, “I’d expect another big run, either at Aintree or Punchestown.” RacingTV reports that Collins believes Jazzy Matty is in good form and will continue to race while he is.
Collins Celebrates Festival Success
Jazzy Matty’s performance at Cheltenham was a highlight for trainer Cian Collins, who also secured a win with Impero in the conditional jockeys’ handicap hurdle, ridden by Danny Gilligan. The Irish Field highlights that this was Collins’ first Cheltenham Festival success.
