Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence is set to star in Zach Cregger’s upcoming sci-fi thriller The Flood. Warner Bros.’ New Line Cinema division picked up the project out of turnaround from Netflix earlier this year, and has scheduled the film for a theatrical release on August 11, 2028.
Production on the feature is scheduled to begin in Europe in the first months of 2027. Cregger wrote the script and will direct and produce the project, which is based on his original idea. Amblin Entertainment is producing alongside Cregger’s frequent collaborators Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo Entertainment. Plot details and further casting are currently kept under wraps.
Creative Team Reunion and Box Office Success
The project reunites Cregger with Warner Bros. following his 2025 horror mystery Weapons, a commercial and critical success that grossed $270 million worldwide off a budget of less than $40 million and led the domestic box office for four consecutive weeks. That film earned Amy Madigan a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role as Aunt Gladys.

Lawrence’s Upcoming Film Slate
Lawrence won the Best Actress Oscar in 2013 for Silver Linings Playbook and is known for starring in The Hunger Games franchise, American Hustle, Joy, Don’t Look Up, No Hard Feelings, Causeway, and the post-partum drama Die My Love, which earned her a Golden Globe nomination.
Her upcoming projects include the Martin Scorsese thriller What Happens at Night starring alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, and the upcoming Hunger Games prequel Sunrise on the Reaping.
