Jenny McCarthy Recalls Tom Cruise Scientology Recruitment Attempt at 2006 Wedding
Jenny McCarthy stated on her podcast that Tom Cruise attempted to recruit her and then-boyfriend Jim Carrey into the Church of Scientology around his November 2006 wedding to Katie Holmes. Speaking on the Oct. 15 episode of the “Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg Show,” the 53-year-old actress detailed an uncomfortable rehearsal dinner where she experienced what she described as the “Scientology stare.”
Sitting Across From the Bride and Groom in the Belly of the Beast
McCarthy and Carrey sat directly across from Cruise, Holmes, and their immediate circle during the rehearsal dinner, Yahoo reported. The gathering took place shortly after Cruise and Holmes welcomed their daughter, Suri, who was seven months old at the time. When a nanny brought the infant over to the table, McCarthy asked if she could hold the baby.

The entire room stopped talking and stared at her, prompting McCarthy to compare the reaction to a scene from “Rosemary’s Baby.” After Holmes slowly passed the baby to her, McCarthy said “Hi, baby” in a monotonous tone and handed the infant back, after which conversations resumed. McCarthy recalled thinking she was in the “belly of the beast.” USA Today noted that representatives for Cruise and Carrey did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
An Awkward Exchange With David Miscavige
Cruise introduced McCarthy to the best man and longtime leader of the Church of Scientology, David Miscavige. McCarthy told podcast guest and former Sea Org member Anne Gollert Hill that she made a demeaning remark when meeting the church leader.

“I go, ‘Haha, you got picked, congratulations,'” McCarthy said on the podcast. She noted that Miscavige clearly did not appreciate the comment, forcing Cruise to laugh to cover up the awkward moment. McCarthy added that Cruise subsequently invited her and Carrey to his home in Aspen, but Carrey declined because he believed the church would try to lure them in, recalling that Scientology members had previously approached the actor without success.
Observations on Katie Holmes and Marriage Dynamics
Reflecting on her interactions with Holmes during that period, McCarthy said the “Dawson’s Creek” star “looked like a deer in headlights” later in her marriage. McCarthy explained that she frequently pulled Holmes aside at events to check if she was doing well, noting a distinct shift in Holmes’ demeanor as the marriage progressed. Cruise and Holmes ultimately divorced in 2012.
