Former Barcelona and Sporting CP defender Jérémy Mathieu is currently working at an Intersport store in France, a decision he made to maintain a social life after retiring from professional football in 2023.

A New Chapter After a Successful Career

Mathieu, 41, enjoyed a distinguished career that included a Champions League title with Barcelona in 2015, along with three Copa del Rey and two La Liga titles. He spent three years with Sporting CP in Portugal, winning three cups, and too played for Sochaux and Toulouse before his time in Spain. Despite exploring options to remain involved in football, he ultimately chose a different path.

The Decision to Work at Intersport

“I tried to stay in football, like everyone else,” Mathieu confessed, explaining his initial desire to continue within the sport. However, after facing challenges in finding a suitable role, he opted to join Intersport “to have a social life.” Reports from April 2025 indicate he works in the football section of the store, located near Marseille.

More Than Meets the Eye

Even as the move may appear unconventional for a Champions League winner, Mathieu has clarified that his decision wasn’t driven by financial necessity. According to L’Equipe, he prefers the routine of a regular job. However, he also revealed he is currently involved in a legal case in France that is “causing me a lot of problems,” and he is unable to discuss the details further. A Temporary Role

Mathieu has indicated that his position at Intersport is not a long-term commitment. “I’m not going to do this forever. It was just supposed to have a social life,” he stated, suggesting he may pursue other opportunities in the future.
