Ubaldo Pantani: The Master of Italian Impression and His Return to Gialappa’s Band

Ubaldo Pantani, celebrated for his sharp wit and uncanny ability to capture the essence of Italian public figures, has solidified his place as one of Italy’s premier impressionists. His recent return to collaborate with Gialappa’s Band marks a significant moment in his career, building upon a foundation established with the comedic group.

A Career Built on Imitation

Pantani’s career began in theatre with Giorgio Albertazzi’s company before he gained television exposure in 1997 with Gianni Boncompagni’s Macao. He subsequently balanced theatre work with television appearances, notably gaining prominence in Convenscion starting in 2000. His breakthrough came with his debut in the Mai dire… series in 2004, where he honed his skills portraying figures like Gigi Buffon, Lapo Elkann, Francesco Sarcina, and participants from Grande Fratello.

Expanding Repertoire and Notable Roles

Pantani’s versatility extends beyond initial successes. He became a fixture on Quelli che il calcio in 2009, reviving his portrayal of Lapo Elkann and introducing new characters, including a parody of a chef from the Italian national football team. He also showcased his talent by imitating journalist Marco Travaglio on Glob – L’osceno del villaggio. Further television credits include Stiamo tutti bene (2010), hosting the MTV Awards in 2013, and presenting the special Árpád Weisz, dallo scudetto ad Auschwitz on Rai 2 in 2015. From 2016, he was a regular on I migliori anni and appeared on Il grande match during the 2016 European Championship.

Return to Gialappa’s Band and Current Work

Since May 2023, Pantani has been a key member of the cast of GialappaShow, the new program from Gialappa’s Band on TV8. His impressions on the show include Bruno Barbieri, Filippo Bisciglia, Flavio Insinna, Massimo Cacciari, Gigi Sabani, Gianluca Torre, and Bruno Vespa. He is also a regular panelist on Fabio Fazio’s talk show, Che tempo che fa, which airs on NOVE since October 15, 2023.

Within GialappaShow, Pantani offers a comedic take on the reality show Temptation Island with his impersonation of host Filippo Bisciglia. He also created the format “4 Funerali” even as portraying Flavio Insinna. Pantani has expressed his appreciation for the collaborative environment at Gialappa’s Band, noting their skill in selecting talent and integrating them effectively.
