For the first time in its history, Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, the legendary workshop behind some of the world’s most iconic children’s characters, has opened its doors to public tours. The Queens-based facility, which has served as the creative hub for Muppets and other beloved puppets since 2009, now offers visitors an exclusive glimpse into the artistry and craftsmanship that bring these characters to life.
A Legacy of Puppetry and Imagination
Founded by Jim Henson in the 1960s in Manhattan, the Creature Shop has been a cornerstone of puppetry and special effects for decades. Over the years, it has moved several times within New York City before settling in its current location in Queens in 2009. The workshop has been instrumental in creating characters for *Sesame Street*, including Big Bird and Cookie Monster, as well as the *Fraggle Rock* ensemble, according to reports from ABC News and AP News.
