Sophie Turner Stars in ‘Joan’: The True Story Behind the British Crime Drama

The British crime drama miniseries *Joan* features Sophie Turner as Joan Hannington, a real-life figure known in the British criminal underworld as “the Godmother.” Created by Anna Symon for ITV, the six-episode series chronicles Hannington’s transformation from a struggling mother into a prolific diamond thief and criminal mastermind during 1980s London.

Who Was the Real Joan Hannington?

The television series is based on the book *I Am What I Am: The True Story of Britain’s Most Notorious Jewel Thief*, written by Hannington herself. According to the series production details, the narrative follows Hannington’s journey as she leverages her eidetic memory and talent for mimicry to navigate a life of professional thievery.

The show portrays her motivations as rooted in a desire to provide for her daughter, Kelly, after leaving behind a life as a housewife. While the series dramatizes these events, it remains grounded in the life story of a woman who gained significant notoriety for her criminal activities in the United Kingdom.
