Dutch sports journalist and former football player Johan Derksen achieved a surprising level of success in the recent municipal elections in the Aa and Hunze municipality. His popularity as a candidate for the VVD party may require him to capture a temporary leave from his television role on Vandaag Inside.

Unexpected Electoral Results

Derksen, known for his appearances on Vandaag Inside, initially downplayed his electoral prospects, stating on the show that he didn’t even vote for himself, fearing the reaction: “Then they say: That bastard did that himself.” However, the results revealed significant support, particularly in his hometown of Grolloo, where he received sixteen votes, and throughout the wider municipality of Aa and Hunze.

Potential Leave from Vandaag Inside

Merek Ek reported on the talk show that Derksen’s success likely means he will be required to join the city council. Derksen responded with a humorous offer to request time off from Vandaag Inside, stating he would ask John de Mol for two evenings off with full pay. Despite his electoral success, Derksen has indicated he has no ambition to actively participate in local politics, having previously posted a video on the VVD website expressing his willingness to support the campaign as a “list pusher” but not to take a seat on the council. The group leader was reportedly relieved by this decision.

Success for Tom Beugelsdijk and Richard de Mos’ Party

The municipal elections also brought good news for former football defender Tom Beugelsdijk, who celebrated both the promotion of ADO Den Haag to the Eredivisie and his own electoral success. Richard de Mos’ party, Heart for The Hague, emerged as the biggest winner in the capital of South Holland, projected to gain sixteen seats.
