Actor Johannes Krisch spent three decades shaping the character of the Vienna Burgtheater before his departure in 2019, cementing his status as one of Austria’s most celebrated stage and screen performers.
From Carpentry to the Burgtheater Ensemble
His grandmother initially showed him the Vienna Burgtheater only from the outside. Trained first as a carpenter, he approached acting with a striking sense of craftsmanship. Krisch joined the Burgtheater ensemble at age 21, quickly establishing himself among its youngest members before building a reputation for stripping away artifice to examine the psychological foundations of complex characters.
Creative Disagreements and the Move to Josefstadt
After 30 years at the historic institution, Krisch left the Burgtheater in 2019 following creative disagreements under the direction of Martin Kušej. He subsequently transitioned to Herbert Föttinger’s Theater in der Josefstadt. Stage reviews confirm that he delivered a landmark performance there in the title role of the subversive butcher resistance fighter in Der Bockerer.

Beyond his stage career, Krisch earned critical recognition for nuanced film performances. In Götz Spielmann’s 2008 psychological thriller Revanche, which received an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film, he played an ex-con driven by ambition and desperation. When selecting film roles, Krisch frequently cited the philosophy of actor Oskar Werner. He told interviewers that artists should not feel compelled to accept work instantly on command, emphasizing the importance of taking time to collaborate artistically.
Overcoming Severe Health Crises and Personal Life
Despite facing significant health challenges, including a cancer diagnosis and a severe fall on stage at the Berlin Ensemble around 2015, Krisch continued performing across Austrian and German stages. Colleagues such as Maria Happel noted his enduring stage presence, while music fans also remembered his notable turn interpreting Falco’s “Jeanny” with Thomas Rabitsch’s tribute band. Krisch is a father of five, sharing three sons from his first marriage and two children with actress Larissa Fuchs.
