John Lennon’s Sgt. Pepper Piano Shatters Auction Records, Ringo Starr’s Drum Kit Also Fetches Millions
A piano once played by John Lennon during the creation of The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album has sold for $3,247,000 (£2,448,968) at auction, becoming the most expensive piece of Beatles memorabilia ever sold. The sale took place Thursday at Christie’s in Latest York as part of The Jim Irsay Collection: Hall of Fame.
Lennon’s Piano: A Creative Cornerstone
The Broadwood upright piano was instrumental in composing iconic tracks such as “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds,” “A Day in the Life,” and “Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!” According to Christie’s, the instrument significantly exceeded its pre-sale estimate of $400,000 to $600,000.
Ringo Starr’s Drum Kit Breaks Records
The auction also saw remarkable results for memorabilia belonging to fellow Beatle, Ringo Starr. His first Ludwig drum kit, used during early live performances and studio sessions from May 1963 to February 1964, sold for $2,393,000 (£1,804,700). However, the record was briefly surpassed by a drum head from Starr’s second Ludwig kit, used during The Beatles’ first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964, which fetched $2,881,000 (£2,173,095), becoming the most expensive item associated with Starr to be sold.
A Collection of Beatles History
Beyond the piano and drum kits, the extensive collection included a variety of other Beatles artifacts, such as intimate photographs, handwritten letters from Lennon and signed postcards. An affidavit filed by Paul McCartney to formally dissolve the band’s legal partnership was also part of the auction.
Irsay Collection and Christie’s Response
Julien Pradels, president of Christie’s Americas, stated, “Lot after lot, we felt like we were making history. The Irsay sale did justice to the brilliance of the collector, and of the monumental pieces he brought together, iconic objects that tell the story of our culture and our times.” He added that Christie’s will continue to host significant sales in this space.
John Lennon tragically died in 1980 at the age of 40. Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, released more than 50 years ago, remains one of The Beatles’ most celebrated albums.
