Ohio Justice & Policy Center: Championing Criminal Justice Reform
The Ohio Justice & Policy Center (OJPC) stands as a leading nonprofit public-interest law firm dedicated to transforming Ohio’s criminal justice system. Founded in 1997 as the Prison Reform Advocacy Center, the organization has evolved to address a broader spectrum of issues, advocating for fairness and effectiveness at every stage – from pre-trial to re-entry.
Origins and Evolution
Al Gerhardstein envisioned a force for positive change within Ohio’s legal system, leading to the creation of the Prison Reform Advocacy Center (PRAC) in Cincinnati in 1997. Recognizing the need for a more comprehensive approach, PRAC expanded its mission and was renamed the Ohio Justice & Policy Center in 2006. This expansion reflected a commitment to tackling systemic issues and advocating for policy changes.
Core Areas of Focus
OJPC’s work is centered around three key areas:
- Second Chance Legal: This initiative focuses on removing criminal record-based barriers, enabling individuals with records to fully participate in their communities. Services include individualized legal assistance and community education workshops.
- Impact Litigation: OJPC utilizes legal challenges to address systemic injustices and advocate for broader policy reforms.
- Research & Policy Advocacy: The organization conducts research to inform its advocacy efforts and promote evidence-based solutions.
