Kanal Museum Opening Triggers District Traffic and Safety Concerns in Brussels

The new Kanal museum in Brussels opens its doors on November 28, drawing an expected 60,000 to 100,000 visitors during its opening weekend and prompting mobility and safety concerns from local residents, BRUZZ reported. While the initial 30,000 reservation-only slots for the opening weekend sold out quickly, the museum will also welcome walk-in visitors without reservations, setting up a massive influx into a neighborhood already grappling with infrastructure projects.

Ongoing Roadworks Strain Local Circulation Around Sainctelette

Traffic around the Saincteletteplein area has crawled along a single lane per direction since construction began there in 2024. The exit to Sainctelette from the Annie Cordytunnel is currently closed, compounding bottlenecks that will not ease until the roadworks wrap up by the end of 2027. Jane Arkell, chair of the Kanal District neighborhood committee and a local business owner along the Akenkaai, stated that current circulation is difficult and parking is scarce.

District Committee Questions Museum Transit Plans

Kanal management plans to emphasize public transport in its visitor communications, but neighborhood representatives remain skeptical about the reality of car-free attendance. Arkell noted that assuming zero visitors will drive is unrealistic given regional travel patterns. Jan Maarten de Vet, a local resident, calculated that if just ten percent of the anticipated weekend crowd arrives by car, the neighborhood would require 5,000 parking spaces, pointing out that the museum site itself lacks parking facilities. De Vet added that the museum’s opening coincides with the start of Winterpret, a period when traffic on the Willebroekkaai already stalls to the point where residents cannot exit their garages.

Fragmented Administration Leaves Streets Dirty

Beyond transportation gridlock, the neighborhood committee highlighted chronic issues with street cleanliness and public safety. De Vet pointed out that only two public trash cans are installed across a 300-meter stretch, leaving waste scattered around the area. While weekday cleaning crews maintain the streets, residents report that they must sweep the public areas themselves on weekends. The committee attributes these persistent issues to fragmented administration, noting a lack of a single central contact point to coordinate among the City of Brussels, the Kanal museum, the Port of Brussels, Net Brussel, and public transit operator STIB-MIVB.
