Kate O’Connor in Bronze Medal Position at World Indoor Championships
Torun, Poland – Kate O’Connor sits in third place after the opening two events of the women’s pentathlon at the World Indoor Athletics Championships. The Irish athlete is aiming for a second consecutive podium finish at the championships.
Strong Start in Hurdles and High Jump
O’Connor began her campaign with a time of 8.23 seconds in the 60m hurdles, just 0.02 seconds off her personal best set at the recent national championships in Dublin.1
She followed up with a 1.81m clearance in the high jump, achieved on her third attempt, placing her third overall.1 She had some nervous moments in the high jump, even slipping on the mat during one attempt.3
Current Standings
After two events, Sofie Dokter of the Netherlands leads with 2,153 points, followed by Anna Hall of the United States with 2,117 points. O’Connor is currently in third place with 2,068 points.123 Both Hall and Dokter cleared 1.84m in the high jump, with Dokter then clearing 1.87m.1
Remaining Events
O’Connor will continue her pursuit of a medal with the shot place, long jump, and 800m events. The shot put is scheduled for just after midday Irish time, followed by the long jump and concluding 800m at 7:03pm Irish time.2
Lavin Disappointed with Hurdles Performance
In other Irish news from the championships, Sarah Lavin did not advance to the semi-final stage of the women’s 60m hurdles, finishing fifth in her heat with a time of 8.08 seconds.1 Lavin expressed disappointment with her performance, stating she was “lost for words” and needed to review the footage to understand what went wrong.1
