Kentucky Basketball Outlasts James Madison 89-80 at Rupp Arena
Kentucky basketball improved to 2-0 on the season with an 89-80 victory against James Madison on Friday night at Rupp Arena, a game that remained surprisingly close for much of the contest. Five different Wildcats scored in double figures to secure the win, led by Zoom Diallo and Alex Wilkins, who each contributed 16 points.
The early minutes featured a fast-paced, back-and-forth battle with multiple lead changes. James Madison relied heavily on the 3-point shot, attempting 26 long-range shots in the first half alone. Both teams entered halftime tied at 39-39, with Kentucky shooting 15-33 from the field while James Madison countered with 9-26 shooting from beyond the arc.
Kentucky Pulls Away with Interior Scoring and Perimeter Shots
Kentucky managed to separate itself in the second half through sustained interior scoring and critical perimeter shots. Malachi Moreno established a strong presence inside by securing offensive rebounds and getting to the free-throw line, while Justin McBride delivered an emotional spark off the bench against his former team.
Kentucky Wildcats: 50.8% field goal percentage, 10-28 from 3-point range, 40 rebounds, 14 assists, 8 turnovers.
James Madison Dukes: 39.7% field goal percentage, 15-45 from 3-point range, 36 rebounds, 19 assists, 7 turnovers.
McBride finished with 13 points, three 3-pointers, and eight rebounds in 27 minutes. Two of his triples arrived during the second half to help break open the tight score. Mark Pope’s squad improved its record to 28-5 under his leadership when making ten or more 3-pointers.

Kam Williams Returns from Offseason Foot Surgery
The matchup marked the anticipated season debut of Kam Williams, who received a standing ovation from the Rupp Arena crowd during his return from offseason foot surgery. Braydon Hawthorne also reached double digits in scoring for the first time in his Kentucky career.
Despite the home victory, the early regular-season schedule proved unpredictable across college basketball. Purdue fell to Valparaiso and Missouri lost to Saint Louis on the same evening, highlighting that things are still very much a work in progress in the first week of regular-season play. Kentucky travels to Chicago next to face Kansas on Tuesday in the State Farm Champions Classic.
