Keri Russell Reveals Intimate Details of On-Set Romance on The Americans
Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys developed a passionate real-life romance while starring as undercover KGB agents in the spy series The Americans, pulling inspiration from long nights of filming and elaborate disguises. Speaking on Chelsea Handler’s podcast Dear Chelsea, Russell shared that the couple spent their early relationship hours staying up all night, according to reports.
Keri Russell on falling in love with Matthew Rhys while filming THE AMERICANS (2013–2018):“We were falling in love and staying up all night and having sex all the time and just wearing disguises, like, I’m fucking [in] crazy wigs and wearing pearls. When have you ever worn… pic.twitter.com/CUrvRjrOU3”
The relationship between the co-stars began during the production of the television series, which ran from 2013 to 2018. In the series, Russell and Rhys portrayed Elizabeth and Philip Jennings, two Soviet KGB agents operating undercover in the USA during the Cold War.
From Covert Operations to Real-World Intrigue
The on-set relationship remained largely shielded from the public until an unexpected incident forced it into the open. Rhys previously revealed to The Times that a burglary at Russell’s apartment led police to return stolen belongings to the television set, where colleagues discovered items belonging directly to Rhys. Prior to meeting Russell, Rhys had sworn off dating co-stars due to a previous relationship that ended disastrously. Despite that personal rule, he told The Times that falling for Russell felt completely inevitable and “fate-determined.”

Russell described the clandestine early days of their romance as chaotic, secret, and thrilling. The pair has now been together for over a decade and shares a 10-year-old son named Sam. Russell also shares two children from her previous marriage to Shane Deary.
What Lies Ahead for the Actors
While reflecting on her career path during the podcast appearance, Russell noted that she originally planned to take an extended break from acting following the conclusion of The Americans. Those plans changed when she received the script for Netflix’s political thriller The Diplomat, making it impossible for her to turn down the role. In the Netflix series, Russell stars as Kate Wyler, an American diplomat managing high-stakes international crises.

The series earned critical recognition, including Emmy nominations for Russell in the category of lead actress in a drama series. The show’s narrative continues to center on political power struggles and a complicated marriage, pitting Kate against her husband Hal Wyler, played by Rufus Sewell, and U.S. President Grace Penn, played by Allison Janney.
