Frankel’s Half-Brother Kikkuli Begins Stud Duty in South Africa
Paardeberg Stud in the Western Cape of South Africa has welcomed Kikkuli, a half-brother to the legendary racehorse Frankel, to stand at stud. The move marks a significant addition to the South African breeding landscape, bringing the bloodline of a champion to the region.
Pedigree and Racing Career
Kikkuli is the final foal of Kind, making him a half-sibling to Frankel, a dual British and Irish champion sire and undefeated champion racehorse, and Noble Mission, a multiple Group 1 winner . Bred by Juddmonte, the five-year-old is by Kingman, a leading European sire.
Although not reaching the same heights as his illustrious half-brother, Kikkuli demonstrated promise during his racing career. He secured a victory in his second start at Newmarket as a three-year-old. He achieved black type with a second-place finish in the Listed Heron Stakes and narrowly missed victory in the Jersey Stakes (G3) at Royal Ascot, finishing a neck behind Haatem . He continued to compete at a high level, finishing fourth in the Hungerford Stakes (G2) at Newbury, beaten by only half a length.
Arrival at Paardeberg Stud
Kikkuli’s arrival at Paardeberg Stud was facilitated by a prior relationship between Juddmonte and the farm, which also hosts Expert Eye . Sally Bruss, Paardeberg Stud’s manager, explained that Juddmonte offered Kikkuli after observing the positive environment provided for Expert Eye. Bjorn Nielsen secured Kikkuli through negotiations with Juddmonte and plans to syndicate the stallion.
Jockey Oisin Murphy described Kikkuli as “probably the best bred sire ever to arrive in South Africa,” noting his physical attributes and potential .
Significance for South African Breeding
Bruss emphasized the importance of introducing new sire lines to South Africa, highlighting that Kikkuli is the first son of Kingman to stand at stud in the country . She also noted the positive reception Kikkuli has received from mare owners, suggesting a busy covering season ahead.
Paardeberg Stud has already experienced success with Expert Eye, whose progeny are showing promise in Europe, with stakes winners like Lennox Stakes (G2) winner Witness Stand . The addition of Kikkuli further strengthens the stud’s position as a key player in the South African breeding industry.
