Georgia Football Secures 38-14 Win Over Vanderbilt Behind Stockton And Phillips
Georgia football head coach Kirby Smart stated that his team played their best overall game of the season following a 38-14 victory over Vanderbilt at Athens, moving the Bulldogs to a 5-0 record. The Commodores put up a fight in the first half before the Bulldogs took control after halftime. Quarterback Gunner Stockton delivered his biggest game of the young season with 295 passing yards and three touchdowns, while running back Dwight Phillips Jr. paced the passing attack with five catches for 75 yards and a touchdown. So proud of our team, probably our best game overall,
Smart told reporters after the win. We played really physical defensively.
Gunner Stockton And Landon Roldan Lead Offensive Attack
Senior captain Gunner Stockton earned high praise from his head coach for his execution against a sound Vanderbilt defense. I thought Gunner did an outstanding job with execution, played probably his best game,
Smart said. Really a physical game. A lot of respect for Vanderbilt. They had a good game plan and did a nice job breaking through the game.
Wideout Landon Roldan also contributed significantly to the offensive output. The second-year receiver from Bogart, Georgia, hauled in a two-yard touchdown pass on the game’s opening possession and later added a 55-yard reception that set up a short rushing score by Chauncey Bowens. Smart noted that Roldan understands defenses and coverages well while providing valuable production on special teams. He’s doing great,
Smart told reporters. He’s a really smart, bright kid. He understands defenses and coverages. He has speed. Can compete to win, can catch the ball. I’m proud of Landon, especially with the special teams. Proud of some of the things that he did there, but he made some plays today.
Dwight Phillips Jr. Steps Up In Backfield
With running back Nate Frazier still limited, Dwight Phillips Jr. seized expanded opportunities out of the backfield. Phillips rushed for 27 yards and made his primary impact as a receiver, securing a team-high five receptions. Dwight’s awesome,
Smart said about his running back. He’s a great kid to be around. We were trying to find ways to get touches and he capitalized on a lot of his moments when he got a chance. That’s what part of being a good player is. You take advantage of the opportunity you’re presented with, and he’s done that.
The Georgia running back room features returning rushing leader Nate Frazier, who accumulated 947 yards and six touchdowns last season, alongside Chauncey Bowens and sophomore Bo Walker. Smart highlighted Walker’s low center of gravity and running vision during fall camp evaluations as depth behind Frazier continues to develop.
Jordan Hall Generates Defensive Impact And Special Teams Block
Defensive lineman Jordan Hall anchored a second-half defensive surge that shut down the Commodore offense. Beyond his work on the defensive line, Hall contributed on special teams by blocking a 58-yard field goal attempt in the second quarter. Smart praised Hall’s competitive motor and effort, labeling him an inspirational leader for the squad. So proud of Jordan,
Smart told reporters. He played with so much effort. He’s one of our inspiration leaders. It matters to him. He cares. He plays really hard and competes really hard. So happy he got his finger on that.
