Hardtechno Star Klangkuenstler Bans Phones for 10,000-Person Ziggo Dome Marathon

Hardtechno DJ Klangkuenstler banned mobile phones for his seven-hour OUTWORLD marathon set at the Ziggo Dome, requiring attendees to keep their devices in phone-safe pouches. VPRO 3voor12 reported that the artist, who built his massive popularity partly through social media algorithms and viral TikTok clips, targeted the smartphone ban at more than 10,000 ravers in Amsterdam to force the crowd to live in the moment and focus purely on dancing. The audience participated with absolute abandonment, marking an unprecedented level of dedicated dancing not previously witnessed during Amsterdam Dance Event editions at the venue for acts including Reinier Zonneveld, Black Coffee, Solomun, and Afterlife. The crowd featured numerous attendees in cowboy hats and significantly fewer individuals wearing fetish gear compared to previous years, while strictly avoiding white shirts, except for one lone raver wearing an absurd ski goggles setup.

Inside the Phone-Free Ziggo Dome Rave Production

The production design for the marathon set deliberately moved away from standard stage-oriented setups. Klangkuenstler performed inside a Boiler Room-style structure positioned with three tiers of ravers surrounding the booth, supported by three massive chandelier-like lighting installations hung across the length of the hall to flash overwhelming white light. A large screen behind the DJ booth remained largely underutilized, displaying only abstract, vague visuals meant to emphasize the lighting design, though lightning flashes occasionally appeared during intense musical moments.

Musical progression throughout the night avoided the constant high-speed drops often associated with hardtechno. The opening three hours maintained a relentless 150 BPM tempo, but drew heavily on hardgroove elements, utilizing loopy rhythms, vocal samples, and classic rave references such as an upward-pitched ‘Knights of the Jaguar’ instead of a ‘Gypsy Woman’ edit, and the ‘Something for your Mind’ sample featured in Speedy J’s nineties rave classic rather than weak pop remixes.

Broader Phone Bans Across the Dance Music Scene

The strict no-phone policy at Klangkuenstler’s Ziggo Dome appearance mirrors a growing movement across underground clubs and major dance events. Amsterdam ravers have increasingly adopted phone stickers to cover cameras on the back of their phones in underground venues. Similar restrictions appeared at Loveland’s Burst event and during Lane 8’s performance at the Kromhouthal, where attendees were explicitly instructed to experience the music without recording devices.
