KM3NeT Tests Einstein
Physicists tested Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity using atmospheric neutrinos detected beneath the Mediterranean Sea, :: OSEL.CZ :: reported.
An international team working on the KM3NeT experiment searched for deviations from Lorentz invariance, which serves as a foundational principle of relativity. Researchers investigate whether physical laws remain identical everywhere in the universe to eventually unite general relativity with quantum physics.
“We still don’t know whether our spacetime is continuous or whether it could be discrete,” said Alba Domi of the Erlangen Centre for Astroparticle Physics at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg.
Neutrinos make ideal particles for this investigation because they interact with matter rarely. They cross vast distances and pass directly through the Earth without stopping. Neutrinos also oscillate, changing flavor as they travel across space.
Data Analysis Results
Domi and her colleagues analyzed 5,828 atmospheric neutrino detection events gathered during 1.4 years of operation. The initial six detection units of the KM3NeT/ORCA experiment collected these measurements on the seabed.
Researchers compared the energy levels and arrival directions of the neutrinos against theoretical predictions. The analysis revealed no violations of Lorentz invariance, matching theoretical predictions.
The team successfully established new experimental limits for future investigations into Lorentz invariance. Data collection continues as scientists expand the observatory network.
Future Neutrino Observations
Research efforts will expand to include the KM3NeT/ARCA experiment. This array focuses on high-energy neutrinos originating from distant astrophysical sources.
High-energy neutrino research gained momentum after Francis Halzen received the Nobel Prize in Physics for 2026. Halzen was recognized for his contributions to the IceCube polar observatory and the detection of cosmic high-energy neutrinos.
Experiment Questions
Why do physicists test Lorentz invariance with neutrinos?
Neutrinos travel across the universe largely undisturbed and oscillate between different flavors during flight. Precise predictions of these oscillations allow researchers to spot tiny anomalies that could point toward a theory of quantum gravity.
What equipment did the KM3NeT collaboration use?
The collaboration analyzed data from the first six operational detection units of the KM3NeT/ORCA detector deployed on the Mediterranean seafloor. These units recorded nearly 6,000 atmospheric neutrino events over a period of 1.4 years.
