Korea Zinc Accelerates AI and Robotics Integration at Onsan Smelter, Eyes US Expansion
Ulsan, South Korea – March 8, 2026 – Korea Zinc is rapidly integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics into its operations, starting with its Onsan Smelter, as it prepares for a significant expansion into the United States. The company anticipates that these technologies will be pivotal in enhancing efficiency and innovation at its recent Clarksville, Tennessee facility.
AI and Robotics Deployment at Onsan Smelter
Kim Seung-hyeon, Vice President and Head of Korea Zinc’s Onsan Smelter, highlighted the limitations of testing new technologies within a currently operating facility. “We are developing technologies such as AI, robotics, automation and digitalization, but there are limits to testing them while operating,” he stated. “We will be able to try the new plant right away.”
Korea Zinc is already implementing AI-powered solutions, including the use of Boston Dynamics’ four-legged robot, ‘Spot,’ to monitor sites for abnormalities. $7.432 Billion US Smelter Project
In December 2024, Korea Zinc finalized plans to construct an integrated smelter in Clarksville, Tennessee, representing a total investment of $7.432 billion (approximately 11 trillion won). PRNewswire The project will be funded through a combination of joint venture investments from Korea Zinc, the U.S. Government, and local defense companies, alongside loans and subsidies.
The smelter, similar to the Onsan facility, will produce non-ferrous metals like zinc, lead, and copper, as well as precious metals and strategic minerals. Construction is slated to initiate in the first half of 2026, with phased commercial operations expected between 2027 and 2029. PRNewswire
Technology Transfer and Workforce
Korea Zinc plans to dispatch approximately 70-80 engineers, including 50 smelter engineers and 20-30 from headquarters, to the US facility initially, representing 20% of the Onsan smelter’s engineering workforce. The Chosun Biz Vice President Kim emphasized that concerns about technology leakage are unfounded, stating that any knowledge transfer will occur gradually and after a significant period.
Onsan Smelter Rationalization Project
The advancements in AI and robotics build upon the success of the ‘Onsan Smelter Rationalization Project,’ completed in December 2024. This initiative focused on improving operational processes, enhancing energy efficiency, and strengthening cost competitiveness, resulting in higher-than-forecasted operating profits. Nickel Smelter Delay
Korea Zinc noted a delay in the commercial operation of its nickel smelter, originally targeted for 2027, due to unforeseen construction challenges. The test operation is now expected to be completed by 2026.
