Korean Man Arrested for Brutally Murdering Estranged Wife in Front of Young Daughter Amid Divorce Proceedings

A 30-year-old man stands charged with murder and child abuse following the fatal stabbing of his 30-year-old wife in Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province. The attack unfolded on the morning of Dec. 1, inside a multi-family housing stairwell.

Fatal Stairwell Attack Shocks Gwangju

The couple’s five-year-old daughter was present during the assault and sustained injuries to her finger. The victim, identified as B, used a smart watch emergency device to summon help immediately after being stabbed, but later died after being transported to a hospital.

Motel Capture and Court Proceedings

The suspect, identified only as A, fled the scene immediately after the attack on Dec. 1. Authorities apprehended him at approximately 11:40 a.m. the same day at a motel in the Jangan-gu district of Suwon.

During police interrogations, suspect A stated that he committed the crime because he anticipated unfavorable outcomes regarding alimony, property division, and child custody and support arrangements stemming from their ongoing divorce proceedings, according to law enforcement statements reported by JTBC. The court issued an arrest warrant for A following a pre-trial detention hearing, citing a risk that the suspect might flee. Investigators have formally applied charges of murder and child abuse against him.

History of Domestic Violence Reports

Prior to the fatal attack, victim B had filed reports and sought counseling regarding domestic violence involving A on four separate occasions between March of the previous year and recently, according to police records.

To escape the abuse, B relocated to a relative’s residence in Gwangju and obtained a court-mandated temporary protection order requiring A to stay at least 100 meters away.

Flaws in Emergency Shelter System

While law enforcement authorities offered temporary shelter options in areas such as Suwon’s Jangan-gu district, victim B’s family stated via JTBC interviews that those facilities lacked cooking facilities and were limited to stays of roughly five days.

Alternative options in Gwangju were located too far from the victim’s workplace and her child’s daycare facility.

Breach of Protection Order

Investigators found that A used information from divorce filings to locate B’s new address.

The suspect waited near the residence during her usual morning departure time to carry out the assault.
