Vazrazhdane Leader Calls for Removal of US Aircraft from Sofia Airport
Kostadin Kostadinov, leader of the Bulgarian nationalist party Vazrazhdane, demanded the removal of American aircraft stationed at Sofia Airport during a protest on Monday, March 2, 2026. The protest, titled “United for Peace in Bulgaria,” took place in front of the Council of Ministers building in Sofia.
Concerns Over Airport Status and Government Transparency
Kostadinov argued that the caretaker Minister of Defence approved the landing of American planes on February 17 without proper review by the Council of Ministers, which he deems illegal. He further stated that Sofia Airport is currently functioning as “an American base and a legitimate target for the Iranian Air Force.” He cited Spain as an example, noting that the country successfully requested the departure of American aircraft when asked.
Allegations of Government Dependence and Exclusion
The Vazrazhdane leader likewise expressed frustration over being excluded from a National Security Council meeting, which he believes violates the law. He added that Raya Nazaryan, the Parliament Chair, refused to convene an extraordinary session of the National Assembly, and other political parties did not support a request for such a session. President Iliana Iotova also did not respond to a request to convene an Advisory Council on National Security.
Kostadinov strongly criticized the current government, stating, “We are ruled by heavily dependent national traitors who do what their masters inform them.”
Government Response and Regional Monitoring
The caretaker government assured the public on Sunday that Bulgaria is monitoring the situation in the Middle East and is prepared to evacuate Bulgarian citizens from the region. A Security Council meeting was held in the Council of Ministers, with representatives stating that Bulgaria is not a direct target for Iran and does not face an immediate military threat.
Background on Vazrazhdane Party
The Vazrazhdane party is known for its ultranationalist and pro-Russian stances. In February 2026, Kostadinov publicly demanded transparency regarding the presence of U.S. Military personnel and logistical support related to the conflict in the Middle East, alleging the presence of 13 American military aircraft and 500 soldiers at Sofia Airport – a number exceeding the number of Bulgarian soldiers stationed in the capital.
