Russia’s Offensive Near Chasiv Yar Stalled – Institute for the Study of War

Russian forces have largely stalled in their offensive efforts near Chasiv Yar, Donetsk Oblast, despite continued intense attacks. This assessment comes from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a U.S.-based think tank that follows military conflicts around the world.

The ISW reports that Russian troops have made limited gains around Bohdanivka and Ivanivske, but these advances are not substantial enough to threaten Chasiv Yar directly. Russian forces are focusing on attempting to encircle the city, but Ukrainian defenses remain strong.

“Russian forces continued offensive operations near Chasiv Yar on May 16 and 17, and there were no confirmed Russian advances,” the ISW stated in its latest update. “Russian forces are likely attempting to regain the initiative near chasiv Yar following the completion of their offensive operations in Avdiivka and are seeking to exploit potential weaknesses in Ukrainian defenses.”

The think tank also notes that Russian tactics involve heavy reliance on artillery and aerial bombardment, which are causing significant damage but haven’t translated into decisive territorial gains. Ukrainian forces are reportedly holding the line and inflicting losses on the attacking Russian units.

The situation around Chasiv Yar is considered critical, as the city is a key logistical hub for Ukrainian forces in the region. Losing Chasiv Yar would open up a path for Russian troops to advance further into Donetsk Oblast. However, the ISW assessment suggests that Russia is currently unable to achieve a breakthrough.
