Teenager Dies After Falling Into Boiling Water Pit in Kyiv

A 16-year-old girl who suffered severe burns after falling into a pit of boiling water in Kyiv earlier this year has died, her mother reported. The incident occurred on January 2, 2026, when a central heating pipe burst on Lobanovsky Avenue, causing the asphalt to collapse and create a pit filled with scalding water.

Details of the Incident

According to Kyiv police spokesperson Anna Strashok, the girl died on the night of March 21, 2026. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.

The girl sustained burns to approximately 73% of her body and was urgently evacuated to a hospital in Cologne, Germany, for treatment. German medical professionals covered all costs associated with her care. She underwent nine operations, including skin grafts covering 25% of her body surface, but ultimately succumbed to her injuries.

Previous Reports and Investigation

The initial incident on January 2, 2026, also injured a 53-year-old woman, who suffered burns to her legs. The Kyiv City Prosecutor’s Office initiated a criminal investigation, focusing on safety violations related to the accident site.

Investigators found that the site lacked adequate fencing, safety signs, and emergency lighting, as required by regulatory documents. The head of a unit at KP “Kyivteplokomunenergo,” responsible for overseeing the emergency work, was served with a notice of suspicion for violating safety rules, which led to the severe consequences. He faces a potential prison sentence of up to eight years if convicted.

Rapid Medical Evacuation

The evacuation to Germany was expedited through the Medevac Ukraine program, with the patient arriving at the Cologne clinic within 48 hours of the incident. Ukraine’s Minister of Health, Viktor Liashko, highlighted the speed and coordination of the medical response as crucial to the attempt to save the girl’s life.
