System76 has launched a redesigned version of its Thelio Mira desktop, focusing on improved thermal performance, enhanced serviceability, and support for the latest AMD Ryzen 9000 series processors. The updated system targets users with demanding workloads, including workstation tasks, development, and compute-intensive applications like data processing and machine learning.

Key Features and Specifications

The Thelio Mira (thelio-mira-r4-n4) is built around the AMD X870 platform, utilizing an ASRock X870 Pro RS WiFi motherboard with System76’s proprietary firmware. It supports a wide range of AMD Ryzen 9000 series (Granite Ridge) CPUs, including the Ryzen 9 9950X3D, Ryzen 9 9950X, Ryzen 9 9900X, Ryzen 7 9800X3D, Ryzen 7 9700X, and Ryzen 5 9600X.

Performance and Cooling

The chassis redesign prioritizes airflow, resulting in an approximate 13.5-degree Celsius reduction in heat. CPU clock speeds have increased by up to 19%, and liquid cooling options are available to sustain peak performance during prolonged, demanding tasks. A removable bottom dust filter further contributes to maintaining optimal airflow and long-term performance.

Graphics Options

The Thelio Mira supports up to one dedicated GPU via a PCIe 5.0 x16 slot. System76 has tested configurations with NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090, RTX 5080, RTX 5070 Ti, RTX 5060 Ti, RTX 5050, and AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT graphics cards. The system can accommodate GPUs up to 358mm in length, with a recommended maximum length of 348mm.

Memory and Storage

The system supports up to 192GB of dual-channel DDR5 memory, with speeds varying based on module density. Configurations with 192GB (4x48GB) and 128GB (4x32GB) run at 3600 MHz, while 96GB (2x48GB), 64GB (2x32GB), 32GB (1x32GB), and 24GB (1x24GB) configurations operate at 5600 MHz. A 16GB (1x16GB) configuration runs at 5200 MHz. The motherboard supports up to 256GB (4x64GB) with overclocking, though this hasn’t been officially tested by System76. Storage options include three M.2 NVMe slots (Gen5, Gen4, and Gen3) and two 2.5-inch SATA bays. Installing a second M.2 drive disables the secondary PCIe expansion slot.

Expansion and Networking

Expansion options include one PCIe 5.0 x16 slot for the GPU and one PCIe 4.0 x4 slot for additional cards. Networking is provided by 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet (Realtek RTL8125BG), Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 5.2. Audio output supports up to 7.1 channels via a Realtek ALC1220 codec.

Software

The Thelio Mira ships with Linux, offering a choice between Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS and Ubuntu 24.04 LTS.

The Thelio Mira is available in configurable builds, with pricing starting at $1,699. Premium builds start at $4,299 and Elite builds at $4,799. Availability is slated for April. The RTX 5090 upgrade is available for $5,299, a cost that exceeds the price of many memory configurations.
