Ukraine War: Talks Stall as Russia Intensifies Attacks
Geneva – The latest U.S.-brokered negotiations between Russia and Ukraine have concluded without a significant breakthrough, as Moscow launched a series of drone and missile strikes across Ukraine, including an attack on Kyiv that resulted in at least one fatality. The attacks occurred days before the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion and as diplomatic efforts to find a resolution continue.
Stalled Negotiations
The talks, held in Switzerland and facilitated by the United States, were described as “difficult” by both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian presidential advisor Vladimir Medinsky. This round of negotiations followed earlier meetings in Abu Dhabi, which officials characterized as constructive but ultimately unproductive. Expectations for substantial progress in Geneva were low from the outset.
Zelenskyy accused Russia of attempting to prolong the negotiations although simultaneously pressing forward with its military offensive, a charge echoed by other European leaders. Despite the overall lack of progress, some discussion on military issues took place, though significant political disagreements remain, particularly concerning the status of Russian-occupied land in eastern Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly stated his intention to retain control of these territories.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov indicated that it is “too early” to assess the outcome of the talks, noting that Putin is being kept informed of developments. Both sides have agreed to hold another round of negotiations in the future.
Escalating Attacks
Prior to the commencement of the Geneva talks, Ukraine accused Russia of undermining peace efforts with a large-scale aerial assault involving 29 missiles and 396 drones. Ukrainian authorities reported that at least four people were killed and tens of thousands were left without power in southern Ukraine as a result of the attacks.
Specifically, a Russian drone strike resulted in the deaths of three staff members at a power plant in Sloviansk, a frontline town in eastern Ukraine. Another civilian was killed in the Sumy region in the northeast of the country. Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga highlighted the timing of the attacks, suggesting they were a deliberate attempt to disrupt the peace process.
Russia’s Stated Endgame
As diplomatic efforts continue, Russia has reaffirmed its core demands in the conflict. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has publicly stated that Russia’s territorial and political objectives remain unchanged, and that any meaningful negotiations must address these demands. Lavrov referenced alleged “Anchorage agreements” reached with U.S. President Donald Trump in August 2025, which reportedly envisioned Ukraine ceding territory without resistance. Still, the White House has not confirmed the existence of such agreements.
Looking Ahead
With the war approaching its fourth anniversary, the prospects for a swift resolution remain uncertain. The combination of stalled negotiations and escalating attacks underscores the deep divisions between the two sides. Further talks are planned, but a significant breakthrough appears unlikely in the near term. The United States continues to play a key role in mediating discussions, but the ultimate outcome of the conflict will depend on the willingness of both Russia and Ukraine to compromise on their core objectives.
