Kylian Mbappé Enters Champions League All-Time Top 5 Scorers

Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappé has entered the top five of the Champions League all-time scoring charts, drawing level with club legend Raúl on 71 goals after securing a 2–1 victory against Inter Milan in the League Phase opener at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Milestone Goals and Champions League Rankings

Mbappé opened the scoring just fifteen minutes into the match by capitalizing on defensive lapses in the Inter Milan backline, while teammate Federico Valverde doubled the lead nine minutes later. Although Carlos Augusto scored a second-half goal for Inter, it proved to be only a consolation. According to match data, the strike brings Mbappé’s career Champions League total to 71 goals in 99 appearances, putting him level with Raúl, who required 142 matches to reach the same milestone. Mbappé maintains a superior goals-to-game ratio of 0.72 compared to Raúl’s 0.50.

With his next appearance in the competition set to be his 100th, Mbappé stands as the only player inside the tournament’s top-five all-time scorers who has never won the trophy. Cristiano Ronaldo leads the all-time standings with 140 goals in 183 appearances, followed by Lionel Messi with 129 goals, Robert Lewandowski with 109 goals, and Karim Benzema with 90 goals. Mbappé requires another 19 goals to surpass Benzema for fourth place.

Responding to Critics and Defending Work Rate

Addressing critics who have questioned his defensive output and overall work rate, Mbappé pointedly defended his approach to the game in an interview with France Football. As reported by the sources, the French forward remarked that being scrutinized comes with the territory of maintaining excellence over a long period.

“I think it’s not normal, but that’s the life of someone who has been close to excellence for years. I’m no longer in the realm of novelty,” Mbappé told France Football. He added that human nature drives observers to focus on what a player does not do once consistency is established over a ten-year span.

Mbappé dismissed the criticism regarding his defensive contributions by emphasizing the primary objective of the sport. “Everyone has their own point of view, but I think the goal of football is to score goals, to score one more than the opponent,” he stated. “A player who scores goals will never be a problem for a team, because I’ve never seen a team win titles without scoring any goals.”

Recent Scoring Milestones and Ballon d’Or Contention

The 27-year-old forward arrives at this European milestone following a prolific run that included finishing the 2025–26 Champions League campaign as the tournament’s top scorer with 15 goals, despite Real Madrid reaching only the quarterfinal stage. That single-season tally has been bettered only by Cristiano Ronaldo. Over the summer, Mbappé also surpassed Lionel Messi to become the World Cup’s all-time leading scorer by netting his 22nd tournament goal, further cementing his status among international finishers ahead of the Ballon d’Or announcements where he features among the frontrunners.
