Kawhi Leonard Knee Swelling Threatens Return to Los Angeles

Kawhi Leonard faces an unexpected absence due to a left knee injury, jeopardizing his lone scheduled appearance against his former team, USA Today reported. The Raptors announced on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2026, that Leonard will undergo a rehabilitation program to address swelling in his left knee. Medical imaging revealed no structural damage or acute injury, and the team will reevaluate him in one week. Leonard is not expected to play when Toronto visits the Los Angeles Clippers at Intuit Dome on Nov. 2, 2026.

Treatment Plan Follows Offseason Trade and NBA Investigation

The setback arrives shortly after Toronto reacquired Leonard this offseason. That trade faced delays while the NBA investigated the circumstances of his 2019 free agency. The league levied a $700,000 fine after determining Leonard’s representatives and the Clippers circumvented salary cap rules during that signing, as reported by USA Today. Once the penalty cleared, Leonard joined a Raptors roster aiming to contend in the Eastern Conference, opening the current season by averaging 19.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 3.5 steals across two games.

Durability Concerns Emerge After Prior Healthy Season

Leonard’s latest medical hurdle revives questions about his durability following a 2025-26 season with the Clippers where he appeared in 65 games and averaged 27.9 points. Because knee swelling can recur over an 82-game schedule, the 35-year-old forward faces a cautious recovery path. Unlike previous major procedures on his right knee, however, medical imaging confirmed his left knee bears no structural damage, reducing the likelihood of a long-term absence.

Raptors Adjust Rotation While Forward Sidelined

If Leonard misses several weeks as initial reports suggest, Toronto intends to lean on its established core of Scottie Barnes, Immanuel Quickley, and R.J. Barrett. Second-year forward Collin Murray-Boyles stands to gain the most playing time in Leonard’s absence. It’s always frustrating missing time, Leonard said. I came back to compete with this team and I’m focused on getting back to 100. Team officials note that Toronto’s ultimate championship aspirations depend on Leonard’s health arriving by April and May rather than the opening month of the schedule.
