Amaoti Residents Confront Alleged Rapists, Multiple Murders Linked to Gang Violence

Amaoti, a township near Inanda in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, has been gripped by a surge in violent crime, including attempted rape, murder and gang-related activity. Recent incidents have sparked outrage among residents, leading to vigilante action and increased police presence.

Attempted Rape Thwarted by Child’s Cries

In a harrowing incident on Saturday, February 28, 2026, a four-year-old boy’s cries reportedly interrupted an attempted sexual assault on his mother in Amaoti. According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), three armed men broke into a home and robbed a woman of her phone and R350 in cash. As one of the perpetrators attempted to sexually assault the victim, her son began crying uncontrollably, causing the suspects to flee the scene (IOL). No injuries were reported.

Three Men Shot and Killed in Alleged Robbery

Also on Saturday evening, three men were shot and killed during an alleged robbery in Amaoti. RUSA responded to the scene around 10:30 PM, finding the bodies of two men inside a house and a third, identified as a neighbor, in a separate room (IOL). A woman living in the house sustained a gunshot wound to her finger and reported that three armed suspects had demanded valuables before shooting the men and stealing their cellphones and cash. Approximately 16 spent 9mm cartridges were recovered at the scene.

Gang Members Arrested, Linked to Multiple Murders

Authorities have been cracking down on gang activity in the area. Four alleged gang members were arrested in Cato Manor last month and appeared in the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court in May, with their case postponed (YouTube). These suspects are allegedly linked to more than 20 murders in Amaoti since June 2024 (TimesLIVE). Police recovered two firearms, ammunition, and suspected stolen property, including laptops and cellphones, during the arrest (TimesLIVE).

Residents Take Action Against Suspects

Frustrated by the escalating violence, Amaoti residents gathered outside the Ntuzuma magistrate’s court on Thursday, wielding pangas, golf clubs, and sticks to oppose bail for the arrested gang members (TimesLIVE). Community members have expressed concerns about the impact of crime on future prospects and the difficulty of securing employment with a criminal record.

Further Arrests and Shootout

Following the initial arrests, police continued to pursue other suspects. Three suspects wanted for multiple murders in Amaoti were fatally wounded in a shootout with police on Monday afternoon (Rising Sun Newspapers). One suspect had previously evaded arrest during the operation in Cato Manor.

Rape Suspects Apprehended by Residents

On Sunday, March 1, 2026, three suspects were arrested by residents in Buffelsdraai after a 35-year-old woman reported being raped. The woman had been drinking with her boyfriend at a local tavern when she was allegedly attacked by multiple men after her boyfriend went to sleep (IOL). Residents recognized individuals seen with the complainant the previous night, apprehended the suspects, and bound them to a wooden structure before handing them over to authorities. Two of the suspects are reportedly foreign nationals from Malawi. The trio is expected to appear in the Verulam Magistrates Court facing rape charges.
