Aldi to Open Sixth Waterford Store Following Council Approval

Waterford City and County Council has granted conditional planning permission for a new Aldi store in Gracedieu, marking the German discount retailer’s sixth location within the city and county. The approval, granted on February 26th, 2026, will see the construction of a single-story retail store on the Carrickphierish Road.

Project Details

The new Aldi store will encompass 1,367 square meters of net retail floor area and include an off-license and an internal deposit return scheme (DRS) unit. The development will also provide 85 car parking spaces and 18 bicycle parking spaces, covering a total site area of 0.905 hectares.

Planning Process and Concerns

The planning application was initially submitted in May 2025, with the Council requesting additional information on July 22nd. Submissions were received from Mount Suir Residential Management Company and Patrick Pender, principal of Waterford Educate Together National School. Mr. Pender voiced strong opposition to a potential site entrance located near the school, citing safety concerns for pedestrians.

Developer History and Previous Applications

The land is currently owned by Kingscroft Development Ltd, who previously sought and were denied, planning permission for a mixed-use residential development on the site. A previous application from Lidl for a store on the same land was also rejected.

Community Contribution

As part of the planning agreement, Aldi will contribute €39,000 to Waterford City and County Council.

Expansion in Waterford

This new store represents continued expansion for Aldi in the Waterford region.
