Jennifer Finch, the influential bassist for the rock band L7, has died at age 59 following a battle with brain cancer. The band confirmed her passing in a statement released Saturday, describing her as a “beloved bandmate, sister and friend” whose creative spirit helped define the group’s sound and trajectory.

L7’s Legacy and Finch’s Musical Contributions

Finch joined the quartet in 1987, bringing a raw, energetic style that helped solidify the band’s identity. According to a 2017 profile in Rolling Stone, she was characterized as an “ill-behaved and untrained bassist” who injected a necessary verve into the group’s live performances. Finch played on several of the band’s landmark releases during their Nineties peak, including their 1988 self-titled debut. She remained with the group until 1996, at which point she departed to prioritize her sobriety and process the death of her father. “I know I caved under that specific pressure — of not being able to be everything [I felt] was expected,” she told Rolling Stone regarding her initial departure. Finch’s death follows a recent and aggressive health struggle. Earlier this month, she announced her diagnosis of an aggressive form of brain cancer. While initial expectations suggested the condition could be managed with radiation, the situation escalated when complications necessitated multiple surgeries. These procedures resulted in significant physical limitations that required ongoing medical intervention.

Due to the severity of her condition, Finch withdrew from the upcoming U.S. leg of the band’s “Last Hurrah Tour.” At the time of her departure, she encouraged her bandmates to continue the tour as scheduled. This was not the musician’s first encounter with the disease; she was previously diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2011.

In the wake of her passing, L7 members expressed the profound impact Finch had on their lives. “Jennifer was a true original who lived entirely on her own terms, and the impact she made on music, art and everyone lucky enough to know her cannot be measured,” the band stated through their representative.

Friends and family had previously established a GoFundMe campaign to assist with the mounting costs of her medical treatment and recovery. Beyond covering healthcare expenses, the funds were intended to help preserve an archive of her photography and creative work, as well as support the completion of a significant project she had planned for release in 2025.
