The Evolution of La Notte dei Serpenti
La Notte dei Serpenti has transitioned into a major national television production. According to Williams Di Liberatore, Director of Prime Time Entertainment at Rai, the event’s growth is reflected in its shift across the network’s scheduling. Initially broadcast on Rai 2, the production moved to a competitive prime-time slot last year. Following consistent audience approval and strong ratings, the 2024 edition will air on Rai 1, the network’s flagship channel.
"We have understood, through its rapid growth, that it is possible to adapt this model to the rest of Italy," Di Liberatore stated. He noted that the project now serves as a foundational template for future Rai cultural initiatives.
Artistic Direction and Cultural Impact
Enrico Melozzi, the event’s creator and artistic director, describes the fourth edition as the most complex undertaking to date. The program integrates traditional Abruzzese folk music with contemporary arrangements and references to historical figures, including Gabriele D’Annunzio.
"The project is not just about music, but about how a community recognizes and tells its own story," Melozzi said. This year’s production marks the return of the female choir, further expanding the artistic scope of the performances.
Preparations in Teramo
In the lead-up to the Pescara concert, the city of Teramo will host the production team for rehearsals from July 6 to July 19. This location holds specific significance for the event’s history. "The project was born in Teramo," Melozzi explained, noting that the first edition’s rehearsals were held there in 2023. The rehearsal period will conclude with a performance in Piazza Martiri.
Regional officials view the event as a significant driver for local tourism and economic activity. Marco Marsilio, President of the Abruzzo Region, stated that the concert effectively represents the region’s dialet, dances, and popular culture to a national audience, attracting visitors from outside the region and stimulating the local economy.
