Ballets Jazz Montréal’s “La revue finale” Explores Life, Death, and the Human Condition

Ballets Jazz Montréal (BJM) is captivating audiences with “La revue finale,” a thought-provoking work choreographed by Jo Strømgren. The piece, initially presented as “The Final Review” at the Festival des Arts Saint-Sauveur, delves into themes of mortality, memory, and the beauty found within the everyday.

A Unique Blend of Joy and Dread

Unlike some of BJM’s previous energetic and upbeat performances, “La revue finale” fearlessly explores both the celebratory and darker aspects of existence. Artistic director Alexandra Damiani, who took over the company in 2021, and Strømgren have created a piece that is both electrifying and emotionally resonant.

The Narrative: A Life in Review

The choreography centers around a young man revisiting fragments of his life as he experiences his final moments. The “final review” unfolds as he observes the joys of life, love, and dance through the eyes of 12 friends. While the title might suggest a farewell performance by Strømgren, it instead refers to this introspective journey of a life flashing before one’s eyes. Strømgren, a prolific artist with over 200 productions in 65 countries, is known for his work as a choreographer, playwright, actor, and filmmaker.

Choreography and Artistic Influences

Strømgren’s choreography masterfully balances moments of exuberant celebration with unsettling scenes of existential dread. A particularly striking sequence features a distorted song played on a record player, accompanied by a chilling ensemble routine reminiscent of the fungal “hive mind” behavior in The Last of Us. Another scene evokes the work of Marie Chouinard with a medieval-style funeral procession, resembling a living fresco.

Musicality and Emotional Impact

The performance is enhanced by a diverse and eclectic musical score, including works by Gustavo Santaolalla (composer for The Last of Us) and Charles Aznavour. The piece culminates in a cathartic and explosive finale, beginning with subtle movements and building to a powerful crescendo, leaving audiences with a lasting impression.

Audience Reception

“La revue finale” has been met with enthusiastic acclaim, even captivating first-time contemporary dance attendees. The performance ran from February 17 to 21, 2026, at Place Théâtre Maisonneuve as part of the Danse Danse season.
