Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov used his address to the United Nations General Assembly in New York to accuse European nations of systematically obstructing peace negotiations in Ukraine. Lavrov contrasted what he characterized as European obstruction with the position of the United States. He delivered his remarks after strikes between Russian and Ukrainian forces left at least 16 people dead across both countries.

Lavrov used his address at the UN to criticize Western military support for Kyiv. He asserted that European governments are doing everything possible to derail potential peace talks.
The Russian top diplomat stated that Moscow would achieve its military objectives in Ukraine regardless of external circumstances.
Deadly Toll Mounts Across the Border
The speech followed intense cross-border attacks that heightened regional casualties.
Ukrainian regional authorities reported at least six deaths from Russian strikes in northeastern Sumy, Zaporizhzhia, and the Dnipropetrovsk region. A 17-year-old girl was among the victims. Concurrently, Russian officials reported ten fatalities resulting from Ukrainian drone attacks and shelling.
High-Level Meeting With Berlin
Prior to his appearance at the UN, Lavrov met with Johann Wadephul. This marked the first meeting of this kind between Berlin and Moscow since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
The meeting took place amid severe bilateral strain. The German government recently accused Moscow of deploying an explosive-laden drone toward Leipzig’s airport in early August. This prompted both nations to close their respective consulates.
Stalemate Persists Over Troop Withdrawal
According to sources within the German delegation, Wadephul urged Moscow to abandon its dangerous path of escalation toward Germany, Europe, and NATO. The German representative condemned ongoing Russian attacks directed at Ukrainian civilian populations.
The German diplomacy maintained that the evident solution to the conflict requires an end to Russian aggression, the withdrawal of Russian troops, and a durable ceasefire.
