British citizens traveling to the United States for business or tourism require an approved Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) before boarding their flight, according to the U.S. government. The online application determines visitor eligibility and electronically links directly to the traveler’s passport.

ESTA Validity and Passport Rules

An approved ESTA remains valid for two years from the arrival date included in the application, or until the associated passport expires, whichever comes first. Travelers who obtain a new passport must submit a new application. United States permanent residents and holders of valid U.S. visas do not need an ESTA to enter the country.

If an ESTA has expired or fails to match the exact passport information, carriers will deny boarding. Most applications receive approval within six hours, though government processing times vary, and officials advise submitting applications early.

Travel History Restrictions for ESTA Applicants

Strict travel history restrictions disqualify certain individuals from using the ESTA program. Travelers who visited Cuba on or after January 12, 2021, are no longer eligible for an ESTA and must apply for a standard visitor visa at a U.S. embassy or consulate.

Similarly, individuals who visited Iran, Iraq, North Korea, Sudan, Syria, Libya, Somalia, or Yemen on or after March 1, 2011, cannot use the ESTA system. Government rules include narrow exceptions for travelers who visited those nations strictly for military or diplomatic service.

Duration of Stay and Extensions

Visitors entering the United States on an approved ESTA can remain in the country for up to 90 days per visit. Visitors wishing to stay beyond the 90-day limit cannot extend an ESTA-authorized stay internally unless specific long-stay visa options apply. Travelers seeking longer stays must consult the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate for guidance on alternative visa categories.
