Leamington Raceway Sees Reduced Race Dates for 2026 Season
Leamington Raceway will host 12 standardbred horse racing dates in 2026, a decrease from the 13 races held in 2025, according to the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO). The Lakeshore Horse Racing Association, which operates the raceway, had applied for an increase in race dates but was informed of the reduction.
Disappointment Among Local Racing Community
Tom Bain, a member of the Lakeshore Horse Racing Association, expressed disappointment with the decision. He noted that many smaller tracks across Ontario have experienced similar cuts, with some losing as many as two race days. “We were caught off guard because we had applied for more dates,” Bain said. “We felt with our betting going up and attendance figures going up that we may receive another day or two to race because of the success we have shown. So, we were caught off guard.”
Economic Impact of Horse Racing
Bain emphasized the positive economic impact of horse racing on the local community. He highlighted the jobs created not only within the racing industry itself but as well in supporting sectors such as feed suppliers, veterinarians, and blacksmiths. “It creates a lot of jobs here in the area. You’re not just talking jobs in the horse racing industry directly; they have to buy all their feed products from the local farmers, and it creates work for the local veterinarians, blacksmiths included,” he stated.
2026 Season Details
The 2026 racing season at Leamington Raceway is scheduled to begin on Sunday, August 9th, and continue every Sunday through October 25th. Post time for all races will be 1 p.m. The raceway is located at 194 Erie Street North in Leamington. Leamington Raceway offers free admission and parking.
