Lewis Miley Awarded North East Football Writers’ Association Young Player of the Year

Newcastle United midfielder Lewis Miley has been recognized as the North East Football Writers’ Association (NEFWA) Young Men’s Player of the Year. The 19-year-ancient received the award at a dinner held at the Ramside Hall Hotel on Sunday evening, sponsored by H. Malone .

Breakthrough Season for Miley

Miley’s debut for Newcastle United came on the final day of the 2023/24 season. He followed that up with 26 appearances in all competitions the following campaign. This season, Miley has become a key player, notably scoring the club’s youngest-ever goal in the Champions League against Bayer Leverkusen in December . He has made 30 appearances this season, scoring three goals, but is currently sidelined due to injury.

Record-Breaking Young Talent

The England under-21 international holds several records for Newcastle United, including being the youngest European debutant and the youngest player to both score and assist a goal in the Premier League . He can play as a central midfielder, defensive midfielder, or right full back .

Sunderland defender Dan Ballard was named the Men’s Player of the Year, ending Newcastle United’s four-year winning streak in that category. Sandro Tonali finished third in the voting. Sunderland Women’s Katie Kitching was awarded the Women’s Player of the Year, with her teammate Katy Watson named Young Women’s Player of the Year. Former Middlesbrough and Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray received the Personality of the Year Award, and Ian Horrocks was honored with the Bob Cass Award for services to football in the region .

Miley’s Early Career

Miley joined the Newcastle United Academy at the age of seven and signed his first professional contract with the club in May 2023 . He made his Premier League debut on May 28, 2023, becoming Newcastle United’s youngest-ever Premier League player .
