LG convened the LG Aimers Hackathon at the LG Inwhawon training institute in Gyeonggi Province, bringing together 96 young technology talents to build artificial intelligence models that predict baseball pitch success probabilities, according to official company statements released on October 19.
LG Gathers 96 Coders to Predict Baseball Pitches
The competition tackles an industrial and sports analytics problem designed by LG Sports: developing an AI model capable of forecasting whether a pitcher’s next delivery will achieve proper control.
Moving Beyond Traditional Baseball Metrics
Traditional baseball metrics—such as earned run averages, walks, and strikeout rates—evaluate past outcomes rather than future performance.
According to LG Sports, the hackathon challenges participants to move past historical statistics and train models on game variables, including match pressure, game flow, and pitcher characteristics, to project the outcome of an upcoming pitch.
Record Applicant Pool for Ninth Cohort
This tournament marks the ninth cohort of the LG Aimers program.
Following online education rounds and preliminary screening, 96 finalists advanced to the on-site hackathon at LG Inwhawon.
Grants, Prizes, and Employment Benefits
LG provided support grants to all participating finalists.
Following code evaluation, model performance testing, and presentations, the company awarded prize money to the top three teams. Winners also receive employment evaluation benefits, including a document screening waiver when applying for positions at LG affiliates. A concurrent job fair featured representatives from LG AI Research, LG Electronics, LG Uplus, and LG CNS.
Chairman Koo Kwang-mo’s Human-Centric Vision
The sports analytics initiative aligns with the talent development philosophy championed by LG Group Chairman Koo Kwang-mo. According to company statements, Chairman Koo has consistently emphasized that technology must serve as a tool centered around human well-being and smiles rather than existing as an end in itself.
Structured Educational Framework Across South Korea
To support this human-centric AI vision, LG operates a structured educational framework across South Korea.
