The Mecha Comet: A Modular, Open-Source linux Handheld seeking Funding
mecha Systems Inc. is currently running a Kickstarter campaign for the Mecha Comet, a modular handheld linux computer designed for versatility and repairability. The device allows users to swap modules to tailor it to their needs – from a keyboard module for productivity to a controller module for gaming.
The project emphasizes Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). The operating system is available on GitHub (https://github.com/mecha-org), and the hardware designs will be published under the CERN-OHL-S-2.0 license, also on GitHub (https://github.com/mecha-org/mecha-comet-hw/). This open approach encourages community contribution and modification.
Mecha Systems is committed to long-term support,promising official software support for seven years,with the system-on-a-chip (SOC) supported until 2036. They also plan to maintain availability of spare parts at reasonable prices through their website.
As stated on their Kickstarter page, the company highlights: “Hardware Longevity. Our software support will be officially available for 7 years, our SOC is supported till 2036.Community support could last even longer. Access to spares at reasonable prices, we will be stocking sufficient and ensure availability on our website to purchase.”
