From Martha’s Vineyard to a Private Island: The Little Gem Resorts Story

What began as a family’s desire for better family vacations has blossomed into a collection of luxury resorts, including a private island paradise in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Mark and Gwenn Snider, co-founders of Little Gem Resorts, have built a hospitality empire centered around creating memorable experiences for guests of all ages.

A Family’s Vision Takes Root

Mark and Gwenn Snider, initially self-described as “accidental hoteliers,” embarked on their hospitality journey over 25 years ago. Driven by their own experiences traveling with young children, they sought to create resorts that catered to both parents and kids, offering a step above typical “family travel” options.

Winnetu Oceanside Resort: The First Gem

In 2000, the Sniders opened their first resort, Winnetu Oceanside Resort, on Martha’s Vineyard. The resort was carefully designed to reflect the island’s late-nineteenth century shingle-style character while providing modern conveniences. “We cut our teeth on that hotel,” Gwenn Snider said, gaining valuable experience that would prove crucial in future ventures.

Expanding the Collection: The Nantucket Hotel & Resort

Twelve years later, in 2012, the Sniders purchased and reimagined The Nantucket Hotel & Resort, solidifying Little Gem Resorts as a brand synonymous with luxury family travel. This expansion allowed them to build upon their commitment to exceptional hospitality and create a cohesive experience across multiple properties.

Addressing Staffing Challenges and Seeking a Southern Escape

Operating seasonal island properties presented a challenge: retaining employees year-round. Mark Snider explained that finding a southern U.S. Location with opposite seasonality and without visa requirements would allow them to rotate staff between the northern and southern resorts, maintaining quality and raising the bar for service.

Lovango Resort & Beach Club: A Private Island Dream Realized

The search led the Sniders to St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands, a place they had always enjoyed visiting. In 2018, Mark Snider discovered an island property for sale just a 10-minute boat ride from St. John and St. Thomas. After a year and a half of negotiations, they finalized the purchase of 42 acres on Lovango Cay in November 2019. A minimal restaurant opened on February 5, 2020, but was forced to close a month later due to the pandemic.

Building a Sustainable Paradise

Despite the initial setback, the Sniders persevered, focusing on building the infrastructure for a private island resort. This process took approximately five years to stabilize. Lovango Resort & Beach Club officially opened in December 2021, featuring 11 glamping tents and treehouses, with plans to expand to over 70 accommodations, including villas.

A Commitment to Sustainability and Guest Experience

Lovango Resort & Beach Club operates as a completely off-grid, sustainability-minded property. It generates its own water through reverse osmosis, is powered by solar energy and is actively involved in coral restoration projects with the University of the Virgin Islands. The resort offers a range of experiences, from dining at the Waterfront Restaurant and Sandpit to exploring the “Gym in the Jungle” and shopping at the on-site village. Guests can also easily access nearby attractions like Honeymoon Beach and St. John via the resort’s private ferry.

The Little Gem Difference: People and Connection

Little Gem Resorts employs over 100 people at each property, with staff rotating between locations to maintain a consistent culture and level of service. The Sniders emphasize a hands-on approach, personally connecting with guests to understand their preferences and ensure a memorable experience. “To obtain into this business, you have to love people,” Gwenn Snider stated.

Lovango Resort & Beach Club, along with Winnetu and The Nantucket Hotel, continues the Little Gem Resorts tradition of exceeding expectations and creating enchanting experiences for travelers.
